Maya

SHE WAS ANGRY. NO, not angry—incandescent. Rage coiled under her skin, begging for release, and she’d happily put a bullet in the self-righteous Vampir’s gut if it wouldn’t cost her life.

But fury didn’t blind her, didn’t make her stupid. As much as she hated to admit it, for the first time in months she could think clearly because the pain in her leg and hip had dulled to a throb.

And that made her rage even hotter. Because it wasn’t some miracle medicine, wasn’t a human doctor who made her better. The change had been forced on her by the treachery of a person she was beginning to see as a friend.

It hurt, the betrayal. She knew why he did it, but she wouldn’t absolve him. He violated her trust and her autonomy, and that she couldn’t let slide.

Hidden by a line of parked cars and a poster column, she watched Rafael as he exited Corner 12, followed by Miklós. They paused by the entrance, chatted for a bit, then separated in opposite directions. Miklós headed for the precinct; Rafael for his car. She’d noticed it parked half a block away when she and Miklós had arrived earlier. In fact, she’d told Miklós to park close to it.

When the Vampir rounded the corner, Maya left her hiding post and followed at a distance. She wasn’t sure how well a Vampir’s nose worked, so she checked the wind direction, concluded she couldn’t tell shit, and decided to wing it. If he discovered her, fine.

She half-walked, half-ran—mildly amazed she could even do it—until she reached her car. Entering, she turned it on, shifted into gear, and watched the rearview mirror until Rafael’s car slid into the traffic.

Maya trailed him, tracking his position by a tiny red dot moving across the map on her phone. Yeah, she’d tagged his car. Those little magnetic GPS trackers you could order online were awesome. No need to call it in or get permission from anyone. Unless she got caught, of course. She’d have to get rid of the phone, seeing as the asshole had somehow hacked it, but Maya hoped he wouldn’t be checking what she was doing while driving.

She knew Zora and her crew had moved somewhere out of the city, though Maya hadn’t found an estate north of Budapest tied to Kálmán. She now hoped Rafael would take her to them.

But he wasn’t driving north. After twenty minutes of an immensely boring rush-hour slog, Rafael double-parked in front of a bakery.

Half a block away, she double-parked, too, and watched the Vampir shop for enormous amounts of pastry and bread. She thought he’d been kidding when he mentioned bakeries.

After stuffing five bags of goods into the back of his SUV, he merged with traffic once more. Maya followed again.

Almost forty-five minutes later, Maya was certain he’d caught her tailing him and was driving her in circles, because they still hadn’t left the center. Beside the bakery, he’d taken Maya shopping for groceries, fresh meat, and fish. They’d gone to the market, and she’d watched him pick cauliflower for ten minutes.
